Travel in the Time of Corona

For me a good meal is not unlike reading an excellent book. It is a journey across the taste buds. More than once on my travels I have decided when to leave a place depending on how many dishes I still want to try. I’m not even sure I like to cook, but because I love food I find ways of cooking good food. There are some recipes here, and lots of food adventures.

Movies and books both tell stories. Here is to chasing those stories we love through movie locations, arbitrary to-watch lists, plus the secrets from the inside as a movie extra.

Movies from a different angle.

The Nomadic Bard

My writing journeys and what I’ve learned

My name is Zallee. I am an Aussie, I hop from place to place, and I used to have kangaroos as pets. I like to think all that makes me an OzzyHopper

And I have been a nomad - more a slomad - on and off most of my life, including through covid. I have lived and travelled for many years in Japan and China, across Europe, and now I am in Africa - in Tangier in Morocco, Dahab in the Sinai in Egypt, and in Jordan . I have travelled solo, as a couple, alone with my kids when they were small. I have visited, travelled through, done Workaways and homestays, and sometimes I’ve moved for a job. I have lived this lifestyle from all stages and ages of life.

I’ve lived in monastery villages in Italy, visited ghost towns in Turkey, and lived in my stories. I have a flat with sea views of Spain. To survive I teach - almost everything, rewrite articles, write about food and culture for bluedoorcuisine.com who do food events in Tangier, and occasionally some movie extras work for a bit of fun.

But I’m not just a traveler. This is my life. So every day when I do the ordinary - eat my breakfast, do the shopping, go to work - it’s never ordinary. There will always be something which reminds me that I am outside my comfort zone. And that is what makes me feel alive.

But that’s not all of who I am. As I find my own way of surviving, my goal is to write and be published. I write Indiana Jones type adventure mysteries. Everywhere I go is an inspiration - stories about people, the colours and sounds and tastes of a place, the hidden passageways and secret monasteries, the amazing sights and extraordinary cultures of other people, leading their ordinary every day lives - except that to me there is nothing ordinary about them.

The world is truly an amazing place.

I write about travel a lot, but I also write about other things: I love food and movies, and talking about writing. And when you’re not at home, when you’re outside your comfort zone - things just happen. And most of the time, those things are a part of the extraordinary.
